\$\begingroup\$ "The Canon 24-105, even being f4, is a superior lens to the 50mm in almost every way." Maybe in almost every way except one: image quality . And I say that as one who has probably taken more shots with the EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS than with any other single lens (with the possible exception of the EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II
It really depends on what other lenses you have. If you have the EF 70-200 f/4 IS and one or two light-weight primes (e.g. EF 40 stm, RF 50 f/1.8, etc), the RF 24-105 f/4-7.1 would complement very well. It also depends on whether your main focus is stills or videos. moon1029's gear list:
Here are some sample images with Sigma MC-21 Canon 24-70 II 2.8 & Sigma 105 1.4 Art. Sample video with Sigma MC-21 & Canon 24-70 2.8. 4K60P ISO 3200 The stabilization is incredible! The Sigma primes, as a group, perform well – especially the 85mm and 105mm. Interestingly the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 outperforms both Canon lenses.
After using a 24-70 2.8, 5 years for event shooting I never used it for general purpose shooting. I never felt the zoom range was long enough. A few post up in this thread I posted last year what LensTip said about the 24-105 L II. Its a very good GP lens . So the Original Poster has gone with the Canon f4 24 to 105L ii over the Canon f4 24 to 70L.
Canon RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM Specs. Canon has no shortage of premium, high-cost lenses for its full-frame EOS R camera system, but photographers looking for affordable glass have fewer options
The higher quality optics on the f2.8 transmit light more efficiently. Some tests show that the f2.8 actually transmits about 3.2 and the f4 transmits about 5.1. About 1.5 stops difference is noteworthy. The 24-70 weighs about 5 ounces more, has an 82mm vs 77mm filter thread, and has no IS.
